In 2018, WA State developed a $10 million funding program through the Department of Commerce Community Economic Revitalization Board (CERB) focused on rural economic development and offering grant/loan funds to the tune of $1 to 3 million for construction of broadband networks in rural communities. In 2019, the legislature allocated larger funds through the Public Works Board (PWB) with a $26 million award. This shift in departments under the Department of Commerce from CERB to PWB has created new staff positions at PWB who administer grant/loan applications. There is talk of an $80 million capital budget line item in the coming legislative session that could be given to PWB to implement broadband in Washington State. Additionally, CERB is seeking $15 million.
